Eight deli products every kitchen should have
A well-stocked kitchen doesn’t need to be complicated. In fact, a small collection of really good ingredients often makes cooking easier, not harder. They also mean you’re always ready - whether it’s a quick supper after a long day or unexpected friends dropping by.
These are the sorts of things that turn simple food into something memorable and make it easy to put together something good without much effort.
Good extra virgin olive oil
A proper olive oil is the foundation of countless dishes. Drizzle it over tomatoes, vegetables, grilled fish or fresh bread, use it to start a pasta sauce, or finish a dish with a final splash just before serving. A good one adds flavour, richness and depth in seconds.
Aged balsamic vinegar
A good, aged balsamic is far more than just salad dressing. A few drops transform roasted vegetables, strawberries, Parmigiano Reggiano or grilled meats. It brings sweetness, acidity and complexity that balances many dishes beautifully.
Parmigiano Reggiano
Often called the king of cheeses, a wedge of real Parmigiano Reggiano lasts well in the fridge and improves almost anything. Grate it over pasta, shave it onto salads, stir it into risotto, or simply break off chunks to enjoy with olives and a glass of wine.
Good tinned tomatoes
Great tomatoes are the backbone of countless Italian dishes. A quality tin can become a quick pasta sauce, the base of a soup or the start of a slow-cooked ragu. With good tomatoes in the cupboard, a satisfying meal is never far away.
Bruschetta, sun-dried tomatoes and crostini
These are wonderful cupboard ingredients for easy entertaining. Spread bruschetta on crostini, add a sun-dried tomato and perhaps a shaving of cheese, and you have a quick starter or sharing plate. They’re also excellent stirred through pasta or scattered into salads.
Luxury biscuits
A good packet of biscuits is always useful. They make an impromptu pudding with coffee, something nice to offer unexpected visitors, or a small treat at the end of the evening.
Good Italian coffee
Good coffee changes the rhythm of the day. Whether it’s the first cup in the morning or the one that ends a meal, proper Italian coffee brings depth and warmth. It’s a small ritual that makes any home feel welcoming.
….and of course, although not strictly an ‘ingredient’ Champagne has to be included
A bottle of Champagne turns ordinary moments into celebrations. It’s perfect for spontaneous toasts, welcoming friends, or simply marking the end of a long week. Champagne also pairs surprisingly well with food, especially seafood and salty snacks.
With a few thoughtful ingredients like these in the cupboard, good food is never far away.
