A wine tasting evening without leaving the house
Wine tastings have a slightly intimidating reputation. People imagine long tables, complicated descriptions and the feeling that you’re supposed to know the “right” answer. In reality, a good wine tasting is simply an enjoyable way to spend an evening with friends. A few contrasting wines, something to nibble on and a bit of curiosity are all that’s required. It’s less about expertise and more about discovery.
Why wine tastings are so enjoyable
When you taste wines side by side, something interesting happens. Flavours that might go unnoticed on their own suddenly become clearer. One wine feels fresh and lively, another deeper and more rounded. Conversations start, opinions differ and people often discover a new favourite they wouldn’t have chosen for themselves.
It’s a relaxed, sociable way to explore wine - and a very good excuse to spend a fun evening around the table.
Three wines makes the perfect number
The easiest tastings usually involve three wines. It’s enough to create contrast without becoming overwhelming.
A typical progression might be:
something sparkling to start the evening
a fresh, characterful white
a deeper red with more structure
Tasting them side by side helps you notice the differences in style, region and flavour.
Keep the food simple
Wine tastings work best when the food is light and informal. A few nibbles - nuts, crisps, olives or cheese - keep the palate happy without distracting from the wines themselves. The aim is simply to create a relaxed atmosphere where people can taste, talk and enjoy the evening.
Making it easy
Because so many people enjoy the idea of hosting a tasting but aren’t quite sure where to start, we recently created our Wine Tasting Evening in a Box – Taste of Italy.
Inside you’ll find everything you need to run your own informal tasting at home:
three contrasting Italian wines from Piemonte, Abruzzo and Veneto
tasting cards and pencils
a short booklet explaining how to run the evening
a few nibbles to enjoy alongside the wines
Three regions. Three styles. One relaxed evening.
It’s designed for two to four people and takes all the planning out of the experience, leaving you free to simply open the bottles, pour the wine and enjoy discovering which one each person prefers.
Wine tasting doesn’t have to be formal or complicated. At its best, it’s simply a shared evening of good wine, good conversation and a few small surprises along the way.
